Futbol vs. Fútbol

Soccer in Costa Rica is pronounced futbol, with the accent over the last syllable. This is different from the standard Spanish fútbol that people say in other parts of the Spanish-speaking world. Interestingly enough, though, Costa Ricans will still spell soccer with the standard 'fútbol' orthography.

It make me a bit nervous when the written accent does not match the usual pronunciation. I am still trying to figure out whether to say "farMAcia" or "farmaCIa." I had been putting the accent on the "ci" syllable until someone corrected me to say it should be on the "ma". Now I have no idea how to say that word.

Ralph, written accents should always match the actual pronunciation. In the case of 'farmacia', there is no written accent, leaving no sure-fire way of figuring out the pronunciation. In cases like this you need to refer to Spanish accent rules. Go here for a description of the rules: http://coe.sdsu.edu/people/jmora/Accents.htm
